Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

I have received an email today from someone from cheap fabrics, claiming to want to buy my car...funnily enough he wanted me to take an 8,000 pound cheque from him (double to value of the car) and then transfer the rest via western union...of course...that's what sensible people do when they are buying / selling a car!! So now they're into buying cars as well as offering jobs!

they aren't just looking to get people to cahs fake cheques. I was taken by Cheap Fabrics, mind you not from a yahoo address.. they had an actual business email (not any public freemail)

I stupidly gave details to my credit account. They put a payment ONTO it, and then after I had withdrawn and sent the transfer they "disputed the payment". THANKFULLY western union has a daily limit which my transfer exceeded for th UK, so the money was held, I was able to have it refunded mostly and just want to wanr others about this.

Anyone who wants you to print and send checks is a scammer using you to conduct fraud on his behalf.

I received an email also, but mine was a bit different. The whole email is below. Looks like someone is getting lazy. :) Thanks everyone for posting. It is great to have a chance to spot the scams before reacting.
